Naxals set off landmines

Correspondent

KORAPUT: Naxalites set off three landmines and caused serious damage to the staff quarters on the premises of the newly built sub-jail at MV79 village in Malkangiri district around 1.30 a.m. on Monday.

According to sources, about 20 naxalites set off three landmines in the building which was also in front of the local police station and had left towards Lachipeta forests raising slogans against the government .

The jail with a capacity to house 200 prisoners was under construction since March 2006 and was ready for opening in April this year. While the police carried out combing operation after the blast, serious questions have been raised on the reasons of failure on the part of policemen in the police station to act at the time of blasts, despite the fact that the station had SOG and CRPF police personnel equipped with arms to fight naxals.
