Tribals stage massive demonstration

Special Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR: Thousands of tribals on Monday staged a massive demonstration in the district headquarters town of Bolangir demanding action against non-tribals who were managing to obtain fake certificates to prove themselves as tribals.

The non-tribals were managing to turn tribals to secure various benefits such as getting government jobs, admission for their children in schools and to purchase land belonging to the tribal families, they alleged.

Armed with their traditional weapons, more than 20,000 tribal men and women gathered outside the District Collector’s office and raised slogans demanding for protection of their rights.

They submitted a memorandum to the authorities seeking right over the land, water and forests.

The agitating tribals also submitted a list of 300 persons from Bolangir district to the District Collector seeking action against them for procuring fake Scheduled Tribe certificates.

The authorities assured the tribal leaders of verifying the cases and take necessary action within three months.

The tribals who participated in the rally organised by Bolangir Adivasi Samaj hailed from the districts of Bolangir, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Sonepur, Kandhamal, Boudh and Mayurbhanj.
