Upalokayukta recommends demolition of school building
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: Eleven months after Dinesh Kumar, a first standard student of Surekha International School on Magadi Road, died after bricks from the first floor of the school building fell on him, Upalokayukta G. Patri Basavana Goud has directed Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner S. Subramanya to initiate measures to demolish the school building as it had been constructed illegally.
In a letter to the Commissioner, the Upalokayukta has said: “It is clear that the construction is illegal, but I would desist from saying anything further because of an order of injunction from a civil court, which needs to be vacated by your officers before taking up demolition. I want you to ensure that such tragedies do not repeat in future.” Directing the Commissioner to take “stringent action against those who permitted the illegal construction,” the Upalokayukta has also instructed the Education Department to arrange for alternative schooling of the students after the building is demolished.
