NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Monday issued notices to the Union Government and the Election Commission of India on a petition by the wife of senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid challenging the delimitation of Farrukhabad Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh. Issuing notices, Justice Gita Mittal asked the respondents to file their replies by May 28. The petitioner, Louise Khurshid, submitted that the Delimitation Commission had deleted the Chhiramau Assembly segment and added Aliganj Assembly segment to the Lok Sabha constituency arbitrarily without holding a meeting of the full Commission along with its associate members as required under the law. A majority of the participants at a public hearing organised by the Delimitation Commission following the publication of the proposal for delimitation of the constituency had supported the draft, the petitioner submitted. The Delimitation Commission had shown the Chhiramau Assembly segment as part of the Farrukhabad Lok Sabha constituency in the draft, but the Commission had deleted it and added Aliganj to it while notifying the proposal, the petitioner submitted. She further submitted that Chhiramau had closer connections with Farrukhabad since many of its villages were part of the erstwhile Farrukhabad district and Lok Sabha constituency.
