BHOPAL: The Sarvadaliya Nagrik Sanghursh Morcha has called for a complete bandh in Sagar division of Madhya Pradesh on February 3 demanding Central University status for Dr. Harisingh Gour University. Morcha leader Raghu Thakur told The Hindu on Monday that all parties were supporting the demand for Central university status for Sagar University. He said the University had the historic background and met all necessary criteria for elevation as a Central university. Mr. Thakur said Dr. Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, formerly University of Sagar, was established in 1946 by the great jurist, legal luminary, patriot and social reformer Dr. Harisingh Gour from out of his lifetime savings. “This University perhaps has the singular distinction of being founded by a single person’s hard earned money (about Rs. 2 crore),” he added. Mr. Thakur said the Prime Minister’s office had announced last year that a Central university would be set up in every State during the Eleventh Plan. Since Madhya Pradesh does not have a Central university, Dr. Harisingh Gour University is a fit case to fill that slot, he said, adding that even Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh had assured several delegations that had met him that Sagar University deserved to be designated as a Central University.
