Education Department seeks Rs. 2,000 cr. for infrastructure

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: The Education Department has tabled its demands before the Planning Board seeking a grant of Rs. 2,000 crore to fill infrastructure gaps in elementary schools over the next five years.

Commissioner for Public Instruction G. Kumar Naik said here on Monday that the allocation sought was for facilities, including toilets, drinking water, playgrounds and libraries.

EDUSAT

There was a proposal to make the satellite programme, EDUSAT, accessible in all districts, Mr. Naik added.

Speaking about the second phase of “Samudayadatta Shale” programme to be held on January 29 and 31, he said greater emphasis would be laid this year on reviewing the impact of programmes such as remedial teaching programme for slow learners and documentation of educational progress made.

The stress would be on educational quality rather than physical infrastructure.

Panel report

The long-pending report of the high-level committee set to frame guidelines for school admissions may be out in February, Mr. Naik said.

The recommendations would insist on adopting “transparent process” in admission and have “measurable parameters” for eligibility.

The final report of the committee, set up in the last week of August to frame stringent admission guidelines, is yet to submit its report, although it was scheduled to do so by the end of October.

Mr. Naik said there had been many developments, including a Supreme Court case, which had contested the guidelines set by the Ganguli Committee in Delhi that was to be the model for the panel in Karnataka.

He, however, admitted that the new guidelines might not apply to CBSE and ICSE schools.
