proud moment: Actor Shah Rukh Khan receiving the French award ‘Order of Arts et Lettres’ from Ambassador Jerome Bonnafont in Mumbai on Sunday. Mumbai: Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, who was conferred the ‘Order of Arts et Lettres’ title by the French government, says he did not know he was popular in France. “I came to know that people in the United Kingdom knew me after I travelled there. But I never knew people in France also knew about me,” Shahrukh said, prior to a function where he was awarded the title here on Sunday night. “I am proud we have taken our culture and identity to France through the medium of our films.” Shah Rukh said he used to go to the French Cultural Centre in Delhi to watch French movies since he was told that they were the best cinema. He said he had not thought about acting in foreign films as no offer had been made yet. The French honour was conferred by Ambassador Jerome Bonnafont at the inaugural ceremony of a four-day French film festival, in recognition of Shah Rukh’s 15-year-long career in the Hindi film industry. The ‘Order of Arts et Lettres’ is one of the four Ministerial Honours of the French Republic. It was established in 1957 to reward artists. — PTI
