Kanishka: perjury trial of Reyat advanced
Toronto: The perjury trial of the lone convict in the 1985 Air India bombing, Inderjit Singh Reyat, has been advanced to Wednesday amid speculation that he may have changed his plea to “guilty.” Reyat (55) faces one count of perjury for allegedly misleading the court in 27 instances during testimony in the 2003 trial of Air India plane bombing-accused businessman Ripudaman Singh Malik and mill worker Ajaib Singh Bagri.
The two were acquitted in connection with the Kanishka airliner bombing that killed 329 people, mostly of Indian origin. If convicted, Reyat could be sentenced to a maximum of 14 years in prison. He is serving a five-year sentence handed to him in February, 2003, when he pleaded guilty to manslaughter and will be freed on February 9. — PTI
