New drug for TB in 5 years, says expert

HYDERABAD: A new drug that would reduce the treatment duration for tuberculosis from six to two months is expected to be available in five years as some of the formulations were currently undergoing clinical trials.
This was told to reporters by Stewart Cole, director of the Lausanne-based Global Health Institute here on Monday. He said the clinical trials of the drugs which were tested for safety had shown that they don’t cause cancer or toxicity. He stressed the need for the new drugs to be compatible in treating both TB and HIV as 50 per cent of HIV patients in the world have TB. A separate group in his institute was studying the native immunity .
