Anand finishes joint third

NEW DELHI: World champion Viswanathan Anand missed a possible win against arch-rival Vladimir Kramnik and with it, a place to tie for the honours in the Corus chess tournament at concluded at Wijk ann Zee, near Amsterdam, on Sunday.

Anand, playing white, tried valiantly for 61 moves in what turned out to be the longest game of the 13th round and settled for a draw. A tally of 7.5 points gave Anand the third spot jointly with Teimour Radjabov.

Group ‘A’: Viswanathan Anand drew with Vladimir Kramnik (Rus); Magnus Carlsen (Nor) drew with Teimour Radjabov (Aze); Judit Polgar (Hun) drew with Levon Aronian (Arm); Veselin Topalov (Bul) drew with Michael Adams (Eng); Boris Gelfand (Isr) bt Pavel Eljanov (Ukr); Peter Leko (Hun) bt Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Aze); Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr) drew with Loek van Wely (Ned).
