South capitulates meekly

Special Correspondent

Ahmedabad: South Zone surrendered meekly to North Zone in the Duleep Trophy competition at the Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium here on Monday.

Once skipper S. Badrinath was given the marching orders by umpire Anil Dandekar in the ninth over of the first session, a procession ensued and South was skittled out for 211, 12 minutes after the long interval.

After Vikramjeet Singh Malik won an appeal for leg-before against Badrinath, leg-spinner Amit Mishra enjoyed a long and productive spell of 13 overs (he had bowled one on Sunday).

He dismissed M. Vijay, R. Ashwin, R. Vinay Kumar and Pragyan Ojha to secure the match for North.

Fine fielding

Mithun Manhas running to his right from mid-on and converting an excellent catch to send back Ojha highlighted North’s fine fielding effort.

Andhra’s D. Kalyan Krishna and Karnataka’s N.C. Aiyappa, ffered a straight bat, ran the singles hard and even struck six fours and a six to add 55 for the ninth wicket; a commendable performance that set North a target of 70 for a win.

Having done his bit with the bat, Aiyappa had the satisfaction of trapping Aakash Chopra leg before. Sachin Rana fell to Kalyan Krishna, but North completed the task in hand a quarter of an hour before tea.

North won five points and will now lock horns with East Zone in the second league match at Vadodara from February 11. South will play East Zone at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai from February 3.
