Coffee is in the air

The smell of coffee wafted through air at the Town Hall on Saturday as Indian Coffee Workers’ Cooperative Society Ltd., Kannur began its golden jubilee celebrations. The Society manages the chain of Indian Coffee Houses in north Kerala.

The warmth that the ever-loyal patrons felt for Coffee House was evident in the speeches made on the occasion. CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan noted that throughout these 50 years, Coffee House was never a target of allegations.

“This is not a small matter since doubts have been raised on the conduct of many other cooperative movements in the State, some time or other,” he said.

Former BJP State president P.S. Sreedharan Pillai too recalled fondly the time he spent in Coffee House, discussing everything under the sun.

A.K. Gopalan, the popular Communist leader, had set up the chain of coffee houses in the cooperative sector in 1958.
