PUDUCHERRY: The annual training camp for army wing cadets of the National Cadet Corps concluded here on Tuesday. It was a unique experience for the youngsters, who came from different educational institutions in the Union Territory.

A total of 322 students, including cadets in the rank of associate NCC officers, staff and cadets from senior and junior divisions attended the camp, which began on January 21 at Lawspet.

Apart from getting regular training in the respective institution drill and firing quarter guards, the cadets staged various cultural programmes too.

Aim of camp

The main purpose of the camp was to give the cadets an experience of camping outdoors and community living, and to give lessons on character building. It was also aimed at fostering a sense of unity and discipline among the cadets, besides inculcating the quality of leadership, a spirit of adventure and camaraderie.

The training is expected to motivate the cadets to join the Armed Services, and to aid them in their pursuit of other professions as well.

Tree planting

The cadets took time off from the training programme to plant trees at the NCC Complex. Lieutenant Colonel A.S. Narayan, Camp Commandant, inaugurated the programme. Dr. Vanaja Vaidhyanathan of Jyothi Eye Care Centre and her team of medical officers conducted eye tests for the cadets at the camp.

Staff from various government departments spoke to the cadets on AIDS awareness, horticulture, fire fighting mechanism, dowry, and traffic rules and regulations, the officials said.

Colonel G. Dinakaran, Group Commander, NCC Group Headquarters, presided over the valedictory function.

He also distributed prizes to the cadets.
