The mid-term shuffle in the chairmanship of standing committees of the city Corporation has once again focussed attention on the lack of representation for women. A large number of councillors representing different parties including those in the ruling front feel that the LDF leadership should have made use of the opportunity to include at least one woman among the seven chairmen. In the previous reshuffle on the Town Planning committee, the RSP, represented by a woman councillor, had raised a claim that was however rejected in favour of the Janata Dal. Last week, during the elections to the chairmanship of the Taxes and Appeal committee, the lone CPI councillor on the committee, again a woman, boycotted the election to register her party’s protest over not being considered for the post. The question is whether the impending reshuffle following the elections to the CPI(M) district committee would help to balance gender equations. T. Nandakumar
