Freedom fighter dead

Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: Freedom fighter and one of the founder presidents of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) in the State, Varghese Thundiyil, passed away here on Tuesday morning. He was 86.

Mr. Thundiyil, along with veteran Congressmen B.K. Nair, K. Karunakaran and C.M. Stephen, had played an instrumental role in the formation of the INTUC units across the State apart from spearheading several struggles the union took out for the welfare of workers in the unorganised sector. Mr. Varghese, notably, was the ‘padasekharam’ president of the Marthandam Kayal paddy field, where cultivation of paddy has continued without a break ever since it was reclaimed from erstwhile landlord Thomas Joseph Murikkan in the early 70s.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. at the Alappuzha Puthenangadi St. George Church on Thursday. Mr. Thundiyil is survived by wife Mercy and five children.
