SORTING OUT ISSUES: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy at a meeting with representatives of truck owners association in Puducherry on Tuesday.

PUDUCHERRY: Representatives of various truck owners’ associations on Tuesday agreed not to ply their vehicles inside the town during daytime from February 15.

The representatives gave this assurance to Chief Minister N. Rangasamy at a meeting he held to sort out issues related to the lack of infrastructure facility at the Mettupalayam truck terminal.

The government had curbed the movement of trucks inside the town during daytime after the terminal was inaugurated.

According to Mr. Rangasamy, the government had spent a huge sum of money to establish the terminal and it could not be left unused, official sources said.

He told the truck owners that he would be forced to order a crackdown on their entry into the town if they continued to violate the direction.

On the issue of lack of infrastructure facilities in the terminal, he said a committee had been constituted to solve the issue.

A panel under the chairmanship of the Transport Commissioner had been formed to suggest ways to develop infrastructure and to allot space for setting booking offices for truck owners and booking agents.

The committee had been given a month’s time to file a report, the officials said.

The representatives suggested that the government develop the area on a build, operate and transfer basis. Mr. Rangasamy agreed to consider their suggestion.

The government also promised to put up temporary shelters at the terminal till the development activity takes shape, the officials said.
