Staff Reporter

Date to be announced shortly, says official

PUDUCHERRY: The Police Department has decided to make helmet use compulsory for two-wheeler riders from February, Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) Chhaya Sharma said here on Tuesday.

“A decision in this regard has been taken at the administrative level,” she told a press conference.

On whether the government had issued any order to make helmets compulsory, she said the department was following the Madras High Court’s direction in this regard. The Union Ministry of Surface Transport had also issued a direction to make helmet use compulsory for two-wheeler riders, she said.

Recent data showed that there was a marked increase in fatal accidents involving two-wheelers. Majority of the 228 fatal accident cases reported in 2007 involved two-wheelers. The Union Territory was yet to have a full fledged trauma unit to treat patients involved in accidents, she said.

The police planned to make helmet use compulsory in the next 15 days. A date would be announced shortly and an awareness campaign would also be launched soon, she said.

Arrest

The SSP also said that four juveniles were arrested in connection with a burglary at an optical showroom recently. A sum of Rs. 60,000 and gold jewellery were recovered, she added. The four were produced before the Principal Magistrate Court and handed over to an observation home at Ariyankuppam for rehabilitation.
