Cuddalore
In protest: AIADMK cadres staging a demonstration in front of the Government Headquarters Hospital in Cuddalore on Tuesday. — CUDDALORE: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhgam cadres, led by organising secretary K. Palanisamy, staged a demonstration in front of the Cuddalore Government Headquarters Hospital here on Tuesday, decrying the lack of amenities and shortage of doctors. Inadequate medical staff in the government hospitals had forced the poor to seek the services of private hospitals, they claimed. The sanitary conditions in the hospital were repugnant. The septic tank had developed a leak and no efforts had been taken to set it right, the protestors alleged. The hospital premises was littered with bottles and waste. Patients spent a lot of money as they depended on private ambulance operators, they added. Joint Director (Health) B. Raja countered the allegations saying that of the total number of 47 posts of doctors, 43 were filled. As regards specialists, only the posts of psychiatrist and dentist remained vacant. However, a dentist from Panruti hospital had been visiting Cuddalore thrice a week. All the 78 posts of nurses were filled and only one post of pharmacist was lying vacant. Of the sanctioned strength of 43 hospital workers, 39 had been appointed, Mr. Raja said. Of the 32 posts of sanitary workers, four were vacant and of the eight posts of cooks, two were vacant.
