Phone lines of political leaders not tapped: Karunanidhi
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday denied that telephone lines of political leaders in the State were being tapped by the intelligence wing of the police. The report in a newspaper had no basis, he told the Assembly on Tuesday.
Replying to G.K.Mani (PMK), who raised the issue earlier in the Assembly, the Chief Minister said immediately after seeing the newspaper report on Thursday morning, he contacted the police which had not only denied the report but also described it as “mischievous.”
The police in their report said only the telephone lines of those who were suspected to have been acting against the unity and integrity of the country, and those suspected to have links with terrorists, extremists, and fundamentalists were being tapped. The newspaper report was based purely on speculation and was published with a view to create ill-will towards the government.
The Chief Minister wanted Mr. Mani to find out the veracity of the report before raising it in the Assembly.
