Ration cards issued to eligible applicants: Velu
Special Correspondent
Those rejected asked to submit fresh applications Applications being processed at the district level
CHENNAI: Food Minister E.V. Velu on Thursday announced in the Assembly that ration cards have been issued to all eligible applications submitted to the Government till December 31, 2007.
Replying to members’ complaint that people were put to hardship in getting new ration cards, the Minister said those whose applications were rejected for lack of sufficient documents were also informed.
They were asked to submit fresh applications with proper documents.
To avoid any delay in issuing new ration cards, applications for new ration cards were being processed at the district level itself.
Mr. Velu said all cardholders were entitled to get 20 kg of rice per month. The government had issued strict instructions in this connection.
“Sufficient rice stock”
All fair price shops were allotted sufficient quantity to meet demands, with allocations varying across districts depending on off-take. The Government would take stringent action if specific complaints was registered against any fair price shop.
However, AIADMK members disputed the Minister’s claim and said many fair price shops were not supplying 20 kg of rice to the cardholders.
