New Delhi
A man walks on the frozen water of a pond at Kufri in Shimla on Monday. New Delhi: Bone chilling conditions cut a swathe through most parts of the country on Tuesday with many northern States shivering at sub-zero temperatures forcing authorities to order closure of primary schools in some Uttar Pradesh districts. In Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district, four students of a public school fell unconscious due to adverse weather. The authorities ordered the closure of all schools in the district for two days. Cold wave conditions continued unabated in Himachal Pradesh, triggering a water crisis in capital Shimla and rendering an estimated 5,000 domestic water connections non-functional. The city recorded day temperature of 8.7 degrees while night temperature was minus two degrees. It also witnessed snow flake in the afternoon. Heavy snowfall was recoded in tourist resort of Manali, Rohtang Pass, Kinnaur and Keylong . Traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only road link between the Valley and the rest of the country, was suspended temporarily this morning following snowfall. Moderate snowfall was recorded in Srinagar and adjoining areas renewing cold wave conditions in the Valley. The minimum temperature in Srinagar dipped to minus 0.8. There was no let up from the severe cold wave in Punjab and Haryana where minimum temperatures stayed close to the freezing point. Adampur in Punjab was the coldest place in the plains, registering a low of minus 1.2 degrees, followed by Amritsar at 0.6. Freezing cold gripped Chandigarh, where mercury dropped five degrees below normal to settle at 2.4 degrees. In Haryana, Ambala was the coldest recording a low of 2.3. Severe cold gripped the northeast, including Sikkim where moderate to heavy rains brought down temperatures. Chilly conditions also prevailed at isolated places in Madhya Pradesh . PTI
