Fishermen to meet in support of demands

Staff Correspondent

Udupi: The Mogaveera Yuva Sanghatane will hold a mega convention at Kundapur in Udupi district on February 3, seeking the fulfilment of its various demands.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, president of the sanghatane M.S. Sanjeeva said that Mogaveera community should be included in the Scheduled Tribes list. All the facilities available to weaker sections of Mogaveera community in the coastal areas should be extended to inland fishermen.

He said subsidised loans with four per cent interest rate from nationalised banks and cooperative banks should be provided to the members of the Mogaveera community.

‘Matysashraya’

Applications submitted under the “Matysashraya” scheme should be processed immediately and more houses should be provided under the scheme.

He said that facilities available for the agriculture sector should be extended to the fisheries sector. The coastal area should be reserved for fishing activities and for the residential requirements of fishermen. Fisheries jetties should be constructed at Mangalore, Hejmady, Hungarkatte, Kodi Kanyana, Gangolli, Koderi, and Alvegadde.

The diesel quota for fishing should be increased. The land for the third phase of Malpe Fisheries Harbour, which is under the Department of Ports, should be handed over to the Department of Fisheries, he said.

Mr. Sanjeeva said that the four per cent VAT on ice used for fisheries should be withdrawn. The problem of the country-boat fishermen living in the areas from Uppala to Byndoor should be addressed.

A fishing holiday has been announced on February 3 by the Dakshina Kannada Mogaveera Mahajana Sangha, Mr. Sanjeeva said.
