Letters to the Editor
The BJP’s decision to provide for 33 per cent reservation for women in organisational posts is a welcome move. The pronouncement is a landmark in Indian politics and may be a pathfinder for other national parties. Women’s empowerment is the need of the hour. K.A. Solaman, Alappuzha A laudable move but it is unlikely to succeed until 33 per cent reservation for women is institutionalised through a constitutional amendment as similar promises have been made but have not succeeded. Manish Manglani, New Delhi The move should be welcomed by all. It is a step towards women’s empowerment to bring them into the mainstream, and to allow them equal participation in our rapidly growing economy. Ravi Nitesh, Dehradun The decision is only a gimmick to make it appear that the BJP has stolen the thunder from others. If it was sincere, it should have introduced the women’s reservation bill in Parliament when it was in power at the Centre. M.K.B. Nambiar, Mahe By coming up with an implementable formula and by announcing the steps needed to set it in motion, the party has taken a truly path-breaking step. One can now expect the other parties to follow suit instead of pointlessly delaying the issue. Political empowerment is what is required for Indian women who are fast shattering stereotypes. N. Sivaraman, Bangalore The BJP’s move is a radical shift towards gender equality and political empowerment of women. While “secular” and “progressive” parties, which tirelessly berate the BJP for its politics, merely pay lip service to the issue of women’s empowerment, the BJP has actually taken firm steps in the direction. Hopefully, others will now emulate the party and introduce a similar quota for women in their respective organisations. Meghana A., Hyderabad
