Fighting corruption

This refers to the article ‘Fighting the cancer of corruption’ (Jan. 25) and subsequent letters on the subject. Lack of transparency in the functioning of the government is mainly responsible for this evil in the official sector. Opaque and complex laws have to be simplified so that government officials do not have the luxury of exercising discretionary powers. Technology can become an ally in the elimination of corruption. The railway reservation system is an example of how technology can stamp out corruption. Unfortunately, many States have not shown the required urgency in adopting technology.
