Corrections and clarifications

  • The fifth paragraph in a report “‘Demolish houses built for tsunami victims at North Poigainallur’” (Tamil Nadu, January 29, 2008, page 4) was: “President, Salvation Agency, India South Eastern Territory, Mela Kotta Vasal, Nagapattinam, came forward to construct 44 houses at North Poigainallur which was permitted by the second respondent.” A reader said it should have been the Salvation Army, as mentioned in reports in other newspapers. It is the Salvation Agency.

  • The eighth paragraph in an article “Symphony called Helsinki” (The Hindu-Magazine, January 27, 2008, page 7) was: “As we sat for a while absorbing the sheer dimensional magnificence, the murmured chants of the faithful and the soft strains of Sibelius’ Ninth Symphony on the sound system was enchanting and uplifting.” It was an error. Johan Julius Christian “Jean”/“Janne” Sibelius was a Finnish composer of classical music and one of the most notable composers of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. His music played an important role in the formation of the Finnish national identity. The core of Sibelius’ oeuvre is his set of seven symphonies (or eight, if “Kullervo” is seen as a symphony).
