Justice Shivraj Patil resigns as NHRC member

Vinay Kumar

NEW DELHI: Justice Shivraj Patil, Member, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), has resigned. He had two more years to go for completing his tenure.

Mr. Justice Patil, who had officiated as NHRC chairperson last year before Justice Rajendra Babu took over, sent his resignation to President Pratibha Devisingh Patil on Monday.

Personal reasons

Citing personal reasons for his resignation, Mr. Justice Patil said he had requested that his resignation take effect from February 4.

Asked why he resigned abruptly when he still had considerable time to complete his tenure, Mr. Justice Patil told The Hindu on Tuesday that he had done enough work in the Commission and there was no particular reason behind his resignation.

Though there was no official word from the Commission, it is learnt that the resignation has sent ripples in the Commission.
