Farmers at the receiving end

Coconut tree climbers have become a rare breed. Plucking of coconut from tall trees remains a specialised job and few among the new generation are coming forward to take up the job. Chikungunya has compounded the situation. The disease affects joints and there are scores of coconut climbers laid low by the disease.

The net result is that more trees are forced to bear the fruit for longer periods, adding yet another woe to the farmer who is at the receiving end of globalisation and its adverse effects.
