‘Maintain status quo in Madikeri CMC’

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court, in an interim order, on Monday ordered maintenance of status quo to the City Municipal Council of Madikeri.

Justice Ashok B. Hinchigeri passed the order on a petition by P.P. Chami of Madikeri. The petitioner had questioned the legality and validity of the elections held to the council recently.

He had contended that the elections to the council were based on the 2001 Census. The population of Madikeri according to the 2001 Census was 32,496 and based on this the number of seats in the council ought to have been 23. However, the elections were held to 31 wards.

Justice Hinchigeri adjourned further hearing on the case to Thursday.
