Early hearing on elevated corridor not entertained

Staff Reporter

There is no urgency to it: High Court

RWAs of South Delhi had objected to the elevated corridor

Construction is in full swing on the corridor

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday refused to entertain an application for taking up for early hearing a bunch of petitions opposing construction of an elevated metro railway line between Central Secretariat and Badarpur here, saying that there was no urgency to it.

The petitioners, residents’ welfare associations of some South Delhi colonies, had sought an early hearing of the petitions on the ground that only a few kilometres of the stretch remained to be built and construction was in full swing.

“Irrelevant”

Their counsel submitted that if the plea was not heard early it would become irrelevant as the projected would be almost complete by the next date of hearing

The petition is scheduled for February 5 for further hearing. Rejecting their plea, a Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice T. S. Thakur and Justice Aruna Suresh said nothing significant could happen in such a short span of time.

The residents’ welfare associations have objected to construction of the line on the ground of violation of privacy of the residents and noise pollution.

The proposed elevated link, among others, will pass through Greater Kailash, Defence Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Kailash Colony, Jangpura and Kalkaji.

The residents of colonies between Jangpura and Kalkaji also expressed apprehension that the proposed link would damage the green cover in their areas, besides adding to noise pollution.

A Group of Ministers (GoM) of the Union Government has already given its go-ahead to the railway line on the route.
