All set: Kaushik Mukherjee, Principal Secretary, Department of Higher Education, releasing the CET brochure and application form in Bangalore on Tuesday. Bangalore: More than 1.14 lakh students have so far applied for the Common Entrance Test (CET) to be held on April 19 according to the schedule released by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA). Kaushik Mukherjee, Principal Secretary, Department of Higher Education, along with Ramanand Shetty, Director of Medical Education, and Siddaiah, Secretary of Medical Education, on Tuesday released the CET brochure and application form. Speaking to presspersons here, S.G. Hegde, Special Officer of CET and Commissioner, Department of Pre-University Education, said that this year the KEA had received 1.07 lakh demand drafts from 1,271 pre-university colleges, 3,200 from 98 CBSE/CISCE colleges and 4,500 from Horanadu, Gadinadu, Jammu and Kashmir and other candidates. The last date for submitting application forms is February 13. “Last year, we started several new initiatives to ensure transparency. This year, other than putting up all the OMR sheets on the KEA website, we will also put up details of candidates who have applied under reserved categories,” he said. Mr. Mukherjee said the CET results would be announced on May 14, subject to the announcement of the 12th standard results by the CBSE/CISCE boards. Mr. Mukherjee also said that under the World Bank-funded Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme, 14 colleges in the State had been selected to enhance the quality of technical education. Colleges to be ratedMr. Mukherjee said that this year the KEA would take steps and rate colleges based on certain criteria. “We will complete it before the counselling session begins. We will even try to introduce ranking for medical and dental colleges,” he said. About the establishment of an IIT in the State, he said that the focus should instead be on training students from the State well so that they could get admission in any IIT. “Instead of worrying about what other States are getting, we should think about carving a niche for ourselves. We should upgrade our institutions to reach the level of IITs,” Mr. Mukherjee said.
