K. Karunakaran Thiruvananthapuram: Senior Congress leader K. Karunakaran has alleged that the functioning of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government has come to a standstill with Ministers indulging in mutual recrimination. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Mr. Karunakaran urged party activists and his detractors to evaluate the present trend and work unitedly towards preparing the people to express their opinions during the next elections. The February 1 Kochi rally would prove to be a turning point and a clear and new message to the people, he said. Achuthanandan blamedMr. Karunakaran criticised Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan for his failure to control his Ministers who were working at cross purposes and had come out openly against one another. The LDF government had been caught in land controversies one after the other. It was the responsibility of the Chief Minister to carry his Ministers along. The prices of essential commodities were shooting up, while milk was in short supply. The government appeared to be helpless in tackling these issues. The education sector was in the doldrums. Nothing other than conferences was taking place, while problems continued to mount. Mr. Karunakaran said the CPI(M) leadership was being challenged by its rank and file. The Politburo was imposing its will on the lower committees. Such things had never happened before in a cadre-based party like the CPI(M). The veteran leader said the February 1 rally would be a milestone, as it would reflect the actual political picture of the State. The political situation now was completely different when compared to circumstances that led to his quitting the party. He had asked Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala to provide support to the rally in order to clear the confusion that only Karunakaran had rejoined the party.
