IN LINE: Students taking out a rally in Virudhunagar on Tuesday. VIRUDHUNAGAR: The Madurai region of Co-optex has sold handloom goods worth Rs. 52 lakh in the three days of sale through colleges, according to Regional Manager P. Esakki. The Chief Minister’s scheme of ‘Lending a helping hand to handloom’ was well received among the students and the general public, he said. Besides selling sari worth Rs. 152 at Rs. 100 for students, all handloom goods, such as dhoties, pure silk and cotton saris, chudidhars, readymade shirts and bedspreads, were being sold to the people through colleges with a discount of 30 per cent. “The students will get a special additional discount of 5 per cent,” Mr. Esakki said. He was here in connection with an awareness rally taken out by students of V.V. Vanniaperumal College for Women through the main thoroughfare of the town. College patron V.V.V. Anantham flagged of the rally in which nearly 2,800 students dressed in handloom saris and 200 staff members participated. Madurai Kamaraj University Vice-Chancellor P. Maruthamuthu has promised to sell handloom goods worth Rs. 1 crore. Apart from MKU, Mother Teresa Women’s University, Alagappa University and Kalasalingam University have shown keen interest in propagating the importance of helping weavers. MKU Youth Welfare Director Pari Parameswaran and college Principal R. Anusuya participated.
