T.M.Soundararajan belts out immortal tunes

S. Vijay Kumar

The legendary singer proves that age has

not got better of him.

UNEXPECTED VISITOR: Playback singer T.M. Soundararajan with M.K. Azhagiri in Madurai on Tuesday.

MADURAI: “Kan pona pokile, kaal pogalama...kaal pona pokkile...manam pogalama…” — this famous number resonated the residence of M.K. Azhagiri, elder son of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, here on Tuesday.

The singer was none other than the legendary T.M. Soundararajan and the occasion a press conference called by Mr. Azhagiri.

TMS, as he is better known, went on to sing a few more songs like “Ulagam ayiram sollattume…” and “Sathiyame latchiyamai kollada…”.

With a voice defying his age, he entertained audiences with his popular numbers. Mr. Azhagiri said the veteran singer, bestowed with the ‘Thyagaraja Bhagvathar’ award by the State Government recently, would be felicitated at a function in Madurai on March 24. Mr. Karunanidhi and many prominent personalities from the film industry would participate.

A day ahead of his 57th birthday, Mr. Azhagiri said it was an honour that TMS visited his home. He also played a famous number of the singer on his mobile phone.

Parrying questions on politics, he said: “ I will do good for the party and the people … The leader (Mr. Karunanidhi) has himself appreciated my work.”

When asked about huge hoardings that had come up all over the city ahead of his birthday celebrations, Mr. Azhagiri said he had little control over the emotions of party cadres.

Taking a dig at remix numbers, Mr. Soundararajan said: “I will entertain my fans till I turn 115.” To this, Mr. Azhagiri shot back, “we will not be there to honour you then…”
