Antony: date of birth confusion “an internal matter”
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: The confusion over two dates of birth of Lt. Gen. V. K. Singh, slated to be the next Chief of the Army Staff, is an “internal matter” of the Army and “there will be no interference by me or my Ministry,” Defence Minister A. K. Antony said here on Tuesday.
If the Army goes by the date of birth entered in the National Defence Academy (NDA), his tenure as the Army Chief will be extended by a year. That will hit the line of succession and some Generals would have to retire earlier. General Singh will take over after the retirement of the present Army Chief Gen. Deepak Kapoor in November 2009. The Adjutant General’s Branch, official record-keeper of the Army personnel, shows his date of birth as May 10, 1951, while the Military Secretary’s Branch, which oversees promotions in the force, shows it as May 10, 1950. The latter date was entered in the NDA records due to a “clerical error.”
