Schoolboy killed in BDR firing

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: In a major exchange of fire between the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) on Tuesday, an Indian boy was killed near north Bengal’s South Dinajpur district.

While one BSF jawan was injured, BDR authorities claimed that a Bangladeshi civilian was killed and three of their jawans were injured, one seriously, the BSF’s Inspector-General (South Bengal Frontier), C. V. Muralidhar told The Hindu.

The firing that lasted for over two hours was initiated allegedly by the BDR. It occurred shortly after a BSF jawan on patrol duty was dragged into Bangladesh by villagers of that country.

Jawan released

The jawan was released by the BDR authorities after four hours during a flag meeting between officials of the two forces, Mr. Muralidhar said.

Soon after, the BDR opened fire.

The boy, a student of class VII, and a BSF jawan were hit by bullets and the former died in hospital.
