Gopal beats Berczes

NEW DELHI: G.N. Gopal defeated Hungary’s David Berczes in 33 moves to reach five points after seven rounds of the Gibtelecom Masters chess tournament at the Gibraltar on Monday.

Sandipan Chanda drew with German Elisabeth Paehtz in 59 moves to join Gopal at five points. China’s Bu Xiangzhi leads with 6.5 points.

The results (involving Indians): Seventh round: Elisabeth Paehtz (Ger, 5) drew with Sandipan Chanda (5); D. Harika (4) lost to Hikaru Nakamura (USA, 5); David Berczes (Hun, 4) lost to G.N. Gopal (5); Anders Gierdum Hagen (Nor, 3) lost to Aarthie Ramaswamy (4); Stephen Fairbairn (Can, 3) drew with N. Srinath (3.5); Joar Gullestad Pettersen (Nor, 2.5) lost to Kruttika Nadig (3.5).
