Cold wave forces closure of Delhi schools

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Giving some relief to the Capital’s residents from the chilling 2.3 degrees Celsius recorded the previous day, the cold eased up marginally on Tuesday to settle at a tolerable 5.2.

Even so, the relentless cold wave compelled the Delhi Government’s Education Department to direct closure of all schools in the city from Wednesday to Saturday (February 2) for students from Nursery to Class V. Taking the cue, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi also announced that its primary and aided schools would remain closed till February 2 in view of the extreme cold conditions.

The Municipal Corporation Education Committee chairperson, Prithvi Raj Sawhney, said: “The decision has been taken to protect children studying in our primary schools from the severe cold. Earlier, municipal schools had remained closed from January 5 to 13 on account of the extreme cold. The parents of our students have also been demanding that during winters schools should remain closed for a few more days.”

According to the weatherman, the maximum and minimum temperatures recorded on Tuesday were both three degrees below normal. “The cloudy sky ensured that the maximum temperature stabilised at 19.1 degrees Celsius. Wednesday will be relatively warm with a minimum temperature of around 5 degrees Celsius,” he said, adding that Delhiites would, however, need to pack in more than an extra shawl for Thursday and Friday.

Regional Meteorological Centre director S. C. Bhan said: “Northern winds will ensure that Delhi records a sharp dip in night temperatures on Thursday and Friday. We might experience a minimum temperature of 3 degrees Celsius on Thursday and 2 degrees on Friday. The weather will become warmer after February 2 when the western disturbance will come into play.”
