Nine properties, 12 bank accounts detected “Amit possessed properties outside India as well” NEW DELHI/GURGAON: The wife and in-laws of one of the accused doctors were quizzed by the Gurgaon police on Tuesday in connection with the mammoth kidney transplant racket. Dr. Jeevan is the brother of the alleged kingpin of the multi-crore racket, Amit Kumar, and is suspected to be involved in the illegal practice. Jeevan’s wife Pooja and his parents-in-law R.K. Singal and Manju Singal were questioned by the police seeking information about the racket, their property details and possible hideouts of the accused. Jeevan married Pooja, a resident of Delhi, in 2005. Earlier, the police had identified at least five nurses and some 20 employees of two hospitals of the accused for their suspected role in the racket. Addressing a press conference, Joint Commissioner of Police (Gurgaon) Manjit Ahlawat said investigations had revealed that Amit and his brother did not possess MBBS degrees. Also, there were hints at possible involvement of more doctors in the transplant operation, he added. Investigations so far have revealed that the gang planted agents in hospitals and nursing homes visited by kidney patients and approached them for transplant. Meanwhile, the Gurgaon Sector-18 residence of Amit Kumar was raided by a team of the Income Tax and Health Ministry officials on Tuesday. The raids are likely to continue over the next few days as the police claim to have detected nine properties and a dozen bank accounts of Amit so far. A request has been sent to the banks concerned to freeze the accounts. “The documents seized during the raids have revealed that Amit possessed properties outside India as well. He possesses properties in Canada, Greece and Australia,” a senior police officer said. The Gurgaon police also carried out raids at a hospital in Greater Noida and several other places in and around the Capital looking for more information about the accused. “The raid at the hospital spanned two hours and the hospital’s owner was questioned regarding his alleged acquaintance with Upender,” said a police officer. Upender and four agents were arrested this past week.
