THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Ayyankali Memorial Government Model Residential Sports School at Vellayani near here has been equipped with a Sports Performance Analysis Laboratory to enable students to assess and better their performance. Minister for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Welfare A.K. Balan inaugurated the facility on Tuesday. Addressing the inaugural function got up at the school grounds; Mr. Balan said the laboratory would film the students’ performance on CDs and exhibit it later on an LCD screen. This, he explained, would help them rectify mistakes and fine-tune their performance at sporting events. The Minister said the government had decided to enhance the lump sum grant and pocket money for SC/ ST students by 50 per cent. The mess allowance for sports school students would also be increased from Rs.40 to Rs.75. Mr. Balan presented a gold medal to C. Arya, a 10th standard student who was part of the team which won the 4x 400 relay event in the Junior SAF games held at Colombo. He also gave away a trophy to P.B. Vaishnendu who won the silver in the 800-metre hurdles event at the National School Games. Kovalam MLA George Mercier presided over the function. SC/ST Welfare Principal Secretary J. Sudhakaran, Nemom block panchayat president Kalliyoor Sreedharan, gram panchayat president K. Asok Kumar, SC Welfare Director E. Ayappan and Headmistress Prasannakumary were present on the occasion. The inaugural function was followed by cultural performances by the students.
