PUDUCHERRY: They chose to ride the path that cyclists normally steer clear of. They took the risk, and it fetched them accolades. A total of 300 cyclists from 18 States participated in the 8th National Mountain Bike Championship - 2008 held at Pattanoor ‘Chemman Odai’ near Morattandi. The participants effortlessly pedalled down rough terrains and rickety roads wearing headgear to cheers from people thronging either side of the roads. There were competitions for seniors, those below 15 years and 19 years in events such as cross-country and time trial races. The participants, both men and women, had to pedal from 5 km to 25 km. Education Minister M.O.H.F. Shahjahan flagged off the event on Republic Day. Prizes were distributed to the winners at a function held at Lawspet on Tuesday. The cycling event was organised jointly by the Association De Cycling Puducherry and Schools for India.
