MARK OF RESPECT: Lieutenant Governor Mukut Mithi, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy and leaders observe silence in memory of Mahatma Gandhi and other martyrs in Puducherry on Wednesday. — PUDUCHERRY: Lieutenant Governor Mukut Mithi and Chief Minister N. Rangasamy led the people of the Union Territory in paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi and other martyrs on Wednesday. Mr. Mithi and Mr. Rangasamy paid floral tributes to the statue of Gandhiji on the Beach Road. Ministers and Congress leaders also garlanded the statue. A two minute-silence was observed. Students of Bharatiyar Palkalaikoodam rendered patriotic songs. Freedom fighters, Congress leaders, Mr. Rangasamy, Ministers, legislators, local body functionaries and trade union leaders paid floral tributes to the portrait of Gandhiji at the Pradesh Congress Committee office. Vice-president of Puducherry Munnetra Congress K. Lakshminarayanan and party activists also paid homage. Local MLA and PMC leader N. Anandu distributed free food packets to the poor at a function held in his constituency. Volunteers of the Nehru Yuva Kendra took out a procession at Poornanguppam to propagate Gandhiji’s ideas to ensure world peace.
