Gang of thieves finally busted

JALANDHAR: The district police on Wednesday claimed to have busted a gang of thieves with the arrest of its 12 members including 10 women.

Taking a serious note of increasing incidents of theft at marriage functions, a special police party was constituted to keep vigil on the people attending marriage ceremonies and due to suspicious activities some women were marked at a recent function in a marriage place on G.T. Road.

Accordingly few of the marked women were rounded up and during intensive questions, they revealed that they were part of a 13-member gang of thieves specialized in thefts during weddings.

Well-dressed

The arrested persons would manage entry of their well-dressed children at any wedding ceremony function in a secret manner and subsequently, these women thieves would locate the valuables and purses containing cash and ornaments before decamping with the same during the function, the police said adding that they have been using an auto rickshaw to flee from the spot after committing the crime.

The gang had recently robbed a family of a purse containing five tolas of gold and Rs 2.5 lakh in cash during a wedding ceremony at Nirankari Bhawan at Paragpur village near here on January 23.

The arrested persons have been identified as Sham Lal, Chameli, Mohni, Pavitra, Ramo, Sarita, Maneesha, all of them residents of Madhya Pardesh and Sarabjeet Kaidon, a Jalandhar resident and owner of auto-rickshaw.

“A local court has remanded them to police custody for two days,” DSP Rajjit Singh said, adding that a sum of Rs 17000 was recovered from their possession. -- PTI
