PUDUCHERRY: The Coast Guard Station in Puducherry distributed ‘distress alert transmitters’ to fishermen at a function held at Veerampattinam on Wednesday. Colonel G. Dinakaran, Group Commander of the National Cadet Corps, Puducherry, handed over the transmitters free of cost to four fishermen from coastal villages in the Puducherry and Cuddalore region. The transmitters were developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation and manufactured by a private firm, Commandant of the Coast Guard Station Arun Saxena said. The equipment has been fitted with GPS and can sent alerts in case of fire, boat sinking and medical emergency to the Coast Guard Station. Once the message is received , it would be disseminated to ships and aircraft for carrying out rescue operations. The transmitter can float and be used in any sea condition. It operates through DRT transponder of INSAT 3A. The maritime agency had received 85 gadgets, which would be distributed to fishermen in the coastal villages, he added.
