NEW DELHI: The All-India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) organised a human chain here to uphold communal harmony and strengthen social justice on Wednesday, Martyrs Day. Women assembled at Parliament Street to pay homage to the martyrs who fought for freedom from British imperialism and recalled the sacrifices made by freedom fighters in the struggle for a democratic, secular and equitable India. In a resolution, the AIDWA recalled the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi by “Hindu fundamentalist forces,” and expressed deep concern over the attempts being made by communal forces to create hatred and disharmony and undermine the rights of all communities to life without violence. Attacks on ChristiansThe attacks on Christians in Orissa by the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) in the aftermath of the Gujarat election results were a dangerous portent of what was in store if the secular parties, organisations and other voices did not assert themselves and fight the communal forces in a sustained manner, the resolution said. The insecurity expressed by Bilkis Bano after the conviction of 11 accused was a grim reminder that not only were minorities in the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled States extremely vulnerable to communal attacks, but also that their fight for justice was under constant threat, the resolution pointed out. Pledging to carry forward its uncompromising struggle against all attempts to communalise the social fabric of the country, the AIDWA resolved to carry on a sustained fight against all communal forces and counter the targeting of minorities by the Hindutva forces, fight for justice and punishment for all those guilty of the Gujarat carnage and extend full support to victims of communal violence and ensure their safety.
