CHANDIGARH: The second anniversary and annual scholarship awards ceremony of the University College of Fraser Valley (UCFV), Canada’s BBA Degree Programme here in Chandigarh, was celebrated at a hotel here on Monday night. British Columbia Minister Michael de Jong said UCFV was providing a highly practical and applied model of study to its students to prepare them to become leaders in business administration anywhere in the world. “Today the whole world is crying out for strong business leaders. India alone would face a shortage of more than 1,000 CEOs by 2010 and throughout the corporate ladder this number would increase exponentially,” he added. Mr. Jong said UCFV had partnered with Panjab University in 2005 and now with the University of Mumbai. The Indian students deserved the very best in education delivered at their doorsteps and UCFV would also be bringing a series of highly specialised MBA programmes to India along with International Industry Standard Corporate Training Programmes for the retail sector. D. J. Sandhu, British Columbia Regional Innovation Chair in Canada-India Business and Economic Development, said education was not about memorising theory only but also about providing valuable managers who could hit the job running and provide real leadership value to the business world. It was his role to facilitate trade relations between British Columbia and India, he added. “MNCs lining up”Crystal Sawyer, manager of India Operations for the British Columbia Regional Innovation Chair in Canada-India Business and Economic Development, said several multinational companies were already lining up to hire the first batch of students who would graduate from here by 2010. The top award for outstanding achievements amounting to Rs.97,700 was given to Sonam Dutta and the second award for academic excellence and financial need of Rs.48,850 was given to Mandeep Chahal.
