SHIMLA: The Police and the Forest Department have decided to take on the forest mafia in joint operations in the State. Disclosing this, an official spokesman said that a joint meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Director-General of Police, Ashwani Kumar, and the Principal Conservator of Forests, Punkaj Khullar. It was also decided to launch a special drive against the organised mafia and curb illicit felling and smuggling of forest produce. Joint teams of the two departments would organise surprise checks and investigate offences relating to forests. Another area of common concern was illegal and unauthorised cultivation of cannabis and opium in remote forest areas, particularly in the districts of Chamba, Kullu, Mandi and Shimla. It was decided that while the Police Department and the Narcotic Control Bureau would share information with the Forest Department, the Forest Department staff would also actively take steps to detect and destroy these illegal drugs.
