THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will buy 1,000 new buses every year and develop shopping centres at select bus stations. Briefing presspersons on the Cabinet decisions, the Chief Minister said the government would issue transport bonds to clear the KSRTC’s liabilities totalling Rs.160 crore. Shopping centres would be developed at 30 bus stations as the first phase of plans to increase non-ticket revenue. Mr. Achuthanandan said that 2,200 acres would be acquired for the Kannur airport at Moorkanparambu, including 150 acres for rehabilitation of the evictees and 50 acres for an electricity sub-station. The Kerala Infrastructure Development Corporation would be entrusted with the task of acquisition of the land. The lump sum grant and pocket money payable to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students would be increased by 50 per cent. The previous LDF government had increased the grant in 2000 and it had been decided to revise the rates every three years. The Cabinet, he said, has also decided to increase the salary and other benefits of farm workers under the Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development departments.
