The Deputy Director, (STD), KSAPS, Bangalore, writes: “Please refer to the news item ‘AIDS awareness programme scrapped’ by Nagesh Prabhu, published on January 23, 2008. It is totally baseless that the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) has asked the Karnataka State AIDS Prevention Society (KSAPS) to stop funding the Adolescent Education Programme (AEP) in the State. In fact, NACO had already asked KSAPS to release funds for AEP, but these funds could not be transferred to DSERT by KSAPS as the programme has been suspended by the State Government till the AEP toolkit in the State is revised. The process for the review of the toolkit has already begun and is nearing completion.” Nagesh Prabhu clarifies: A top official of KSAPS clarified that the HIV/AIDS awareness programme in schools is not functioning. The reason is that the State Government has not permitted the commencement of AEP in schools in the current academic year. The HIV/AIDS awareness programme will be continued in schools once the Government clears the AEP. NACO has granted funds to KSAPS to take up Information Communication and Education (IEC) in the State. The funds granted by NACO have not been utilised to take up awareness programme in schools.
