Rocket shell recovered off Sherankottai
Staff Reporter
RAMANATHAPURAM: The police on Wednesday recovered a rocket shell off Sherankottai at Rameswaram.
The 24-inch shell, rusted and covered with sea grass, was similar to the one seized by the Navy last year. However, it was found without the wooden box.
Though there was no information on how it reached the shore, it was believed that some fishermen might have netted it, but abandoned it fearing police interrogation.
The shell was taken to the temple police station, where officials of the Navy, the Intelligence Bureau, the “Q” branch inspected it.
Commander S. Mukherji, Area Commander, Naval Detachment, Rameswaram, told The Hindu that it was a 120-mm mortar shell, a standard army weapon. It could have been in the water for several months.
It could be from the same lot seized earlier.
He said it would not explode now as it required a fuse . However, it might have exploded had the fishermen tried to break it open.
As for the frequent recovery of rocket shells off Rameswaram, Commander S. Mukherji said that based on information given by some fishermen that objects resembling rocket shells were found in the shallow waters, Navy personnel conducted searches at several locations. However, the exact spots could not be located. Searches would be conducted near Sherankottai.
