KOLLAM: Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) leader Baby John was laid to rest with State honours at the Neendakara St. Sebastian’s Church shortly after 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Bishop Stanley Roman conducted the funeral rites. The mortal remains were brought to his house from the mortuary at Kottiyam in an open KSRTC hearse in the morning. A large crowd was present there to pay homage to the departed leader. RSP general secretary K. Pankajakshan, who is ailing and undergoing treatment at a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, was brought to Baby John’s house in the morning in a wheel-chair to pay his last respects to the comrade. Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy; the former ministers M.M. Hassan, Neelalohitadasan Nadar and P.K. Kunhalikutty; Varkala Radhakrishnan, MP; K.B. Ganesh Kumar, MLA; and Home Secretary P.J. Mathew were present at the house. Kollam Bishop Stanley Roman and senior Metropolitan of the Mar Thoma Church Philipose Mar Chrisostom led the prayers. The body was taken to the Kollam Corporation complex at 10.15 a.m. where it was kept for the public to pay homage. Baby John’s sons Shaji and Shibu accompanied the body. Mayor N. Padmalochanan received the body at the Corporation complex by placing a wreath. Among those who arrived there were People’s Democratic Party leader Abdul Nasir Maudany; Kerala Congress (B) leader R. Balakrishna Pillai; Congress leaders V.M. Sudheeran, Thennala Balakrishna Pillai, Thalekunnil Basheer and G. Karthikeyan; and CPI leaders, Veliyam Bhargavan and K.E. Ismail. Wreaths were placed on behalf of the Chief Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.
